Sculpture Turntable Plans

These plans produce a very sturdy inexpensive turntable that has no wiggle and will last for years. I strongly recommend working on a turntable so that a sculpture develops in full round.

You will need:
  • 2  12"x12" pieces of 3/4" plywood
  • 4  2" rigid casters
  • 4  furniture glides
  • 1  3 1/2" long 3/8" diameter carriage bolt
  • 1 flat washer for the 3/8" carriage bolt
  • 1 nut for the 3/8" inch carriage bolt
  • 1 3/8" drill bit
  • Sand paper
  • 16  3/4" long wood screws to affix casters to plywood
  • shellac or polyurethane sealer
  • optional: paddle bit to countersink carriage bolt head (use a 3" bolt if you do this)
  • drill
  • screwdriver
  • paintbrush
First sand and seal the two pieces of plywood. Do a nice job. The turntable will last a long time and you'll have to look at them for a while.

Drill a 3/8" hole through the very center of each.

On the bottom of one, put the four furniture glides on  the corners.

Screw the casters in a circle around the edge of the other side of this board. Casters on one side, glides on the other. See the picture for placement of the casters.

Now put the carriage bolt through the side with the glides so it sticks out the side with the casters. Slide the washer on and tighten with the nut.

Now put the board with only the hole on top of the bolt, resting on the casters. Now, turn! This sturdy little turntable should be able to hold well over 100 pounds.

Pictures below should illustrate the idea.
