The Workbench

Find out what's going on in the studio. Check back for regular updates.

May 2008

This month hasn't been quite the hive of productivity. I had foot surgery and have been in recovery. I am on the mend and should be up to my old tricks soon.
  • I've been working on a bas relief of a pregnant friend. Smaller work seems a lot easier with crutches.
  • I have enjoyed participating in an open studio style sculpture class at the Arts Alliance of Central PA. Sculptor Jim Bright runs the session.
  • I have been making plans for teaching a summer course in sculpture, also at the Art Alliance of Central PA.

April 2008

This month I'll be trying to wrap up a few projects so I can start in on some new ideas.
  • The 40th Anniversary Exhibition for the Art Alliance is up. The Curator placed my Beekeeper sculpture right as you walk into the gallery space greeting each guest. The reception is this Thursday.
  • I'll cast Anna and Lyle.
  • Finish cleaning up t he cast of the resident Caveman, Homo ergaster.
  • Take measurements for two new portraits, Lily and Kathy.
  • Develop the composition for my "Great Wall" sculpture.

March 2008

The workbench is full this month.
  • Busts of Anna and Lyle (see homepage) are nearing completion.
  • I was a guest artist at Penn State's Sculpture Studio.
  • Beekeeper was accepted into the Art Alliance of Central PA Annual Juried show at Robeson Gallery at Penn State.
  • Two busts in development: a couple, Anna and Lyle from Virginia. Anna's in-progress photo is in the Portrait Gallery.
  • The resident 'caveman,' Homo ergaster will be cast very soon. His dreadlocks will pose a challenge to my mold-making skills! His photo is also in the Portrait Gallery.
  • Sketches are under way for a new project  about China when the construction of the Great Wall began.

February 2008

It's an exciting month with several projects in the development stage and a few outreach projects.
  • I was the demonstration artist at the elementary school Art Expo. My son was proud as punch, and that means a lot!
  • The "Go Figure '08" show at the Art Alliance of Central PA featured a host of beautiful works. The bust of Richie was included. Richie's bust is shown in the Portrait Gallery.
  • Bust of the early human ancestor, Homo ergaster was taken from start to nearly ready to cast.  See Gallery for pictures prior to casting.
  • Busts of the couple Anna and Lyle began.
  • Bust of Richie was cast and mounted for show.

January 2008

Good start to the new year, with some new projects and outreach.
  • Bust of Richie is nearing completion.
  • Represented sculptors at the Elementary School Career fair.
  • Renovated a sculpture stand... makes a big difference  having two stands now.
  • Completed research for H.ergaster bust. Most busts of our ancestors look more like taxidermy than portraits. I suppose they are serving scientific purposes, but one of the things I find interesting about these beings is the dawning of human psychology. I want to show that in my bust of Homo ergaster.
